Packing list for ski and splitboard tours

Wintertime is touring time – in times of corona more than ever. We have put together a packing list for your ski or splitboard tour so that you are well equipped for your day on the mountain. See what you absolutely mustn’t forget.

Basics

 – Touring skis / splitboard
 – Skins & crampons (the latter especially important on icy trails)
 – Ski touring boots (here you need special ones that fit the bindings of the touring skis)
 – Snowboard boots (you can use your normal snowboard boots here)
 – Ski poles / telescopic poles
 – Helmet & ski goggles

 – Backpack: 20-25l for a day tour. Preferably with a proper hip belt and an attachment option for skis/snowboard. Ideally with an avalanche airbag.

LVS equipment

 – LVS device (“Pieps”)

 – Probe

 – Shovel

Clothing

 – Gloves (thin ones for the ascent, warm ones for the descent)

 – Cap / headband
 – Scarf / loop scarf
 – Baselayer (functional long-sleeved shirt)
 – Midlayer (fleece jacket, hoodie, softshell jacket)
 – Hard shell jacket
 – Ski pants
 – Ski socks

 – Change of clothes (at least baselayer)

Miscellaneous

 – Sunglasses

 – Sunscreen (face & lips)
 – Drinking/thermos flask (at least 1-1.5 l liquid, more depending on the tour)
 – Food / Snacks
 – Small pharmacy as required (blister plasters, magnesium, etc.)
 – Handkerchiefs
 – Fully charged cell phone, power bank if necessary

 – Map of the region

With this basic equipment, you are already well equipped for a day tour. Of course, you can also take other equipment with you, such as an action cam, altimeter or skin glue. However, when packing your rucksack, always bear in mind that everything you take with you means extra weight that you have to carry up the mountain!  So here are a few tips on how you can save weight:

 – Merino wool base and mid layers keep you warm even when you’re sweating. This means you don’t need a change of clothes.
 – Check the weather in advance. If it’s not going to be too cold (bear in mind the wind!), you may be able to do without a layer of clothing.
 – Wear a lightweight midlayer.
 – Choose the lightest possible containers for your food and drinks.

 – A rucksack with a proper hip belt distributes the weight more comfortably on your back.

And now – have fun on your next tour!
