You\u2019re athletic, go hiking regularly, or already climb indoors. You see a steel cable and a few metal bolts, and think to yourself: I can do this even without taking a class. Technically speaking, no one is stopping you from setting out on your own. All you need is a via ferrata set, a helmet, a climbing harness, and the willingness to just give it a try. The problem isn\u2019t the gear. The scale measures steepness, hold spacing, and effort required. That’s it. Pure terrain mechanics. It does not measure: <\/p>

The sling technique at the anchor points.<\/strong> This is exactly where most serious accidents happen\u2014not at the climbing spot itself. Both carabiners must be clipped in correctly and in the right order. Anyone who\u2019s never done this under real pressure won\u2019t realize until they\u2019re on the rock just how quickly you can forget a step. <\/p>

Weather Assessment in Alpine Terrain.<\/strong> A Grade A in sunny conditions isn’t the same as a Grade A when a thunderstorm is brewing or the rock is wet. The grade doesn’t change. The risk, however, increases dramatically, and without experience, you’ll often recognize the warning signs too late. <\/p>

What happens if you or someone in your group freezes up?<\/strong> A fear of heights usually doesn’t become apparent until you’re halfway up the wall, not while planning the day before.
